Several well-known Chicago bars and eateries in the West Loop shut down their operations or relocated last year, according to a list compiled by Eater Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune initially reported on Lincoln Park’s Floriole leaving its spot in Politan Row food hall in November 2019. Customers can still obtain the bakery’s treats at its Passion Hall stall at 111 N. Aberdeen St.

Square Roots Kitchen founder Derin Alemli announced the closing of his healthy casual restaurant in November 2019 in a Facebook post. Opening at that location in January 2018, Square Roots was unable to generate the "foot traffic" required to sustain the business.

“To all of our customers and friends of SRK, I just want to say thank you,” Alemli said in his post. “We wouldn't have made it this far without you. We did a lot of things right, and I will hold my head high knowing that we made great healthy food and helped so many people eat well in our four years of operation.”

Cuban food stall Clave also had its final day of operation in November 2019. Clave owners posted a message on its Instagram page announcing the reason for the closure as a rededication to a healthier work-life balance. The owners will continue to focus on serving food to residents through their Cuban-Filipino restaurant Bayan Ko in Ravenswood.

Ella’s Corner café closed its Jackson Boulevard business in September 2019. In a Facebook post, owners said they shut down the café in order to “pursue other projects and passions.” The Indian restaurant Tikkawala, which occupied the space before Ella’s, closed in October 2018 after only four months of service.

Popular nightclub The Mid closed in February 2019, with the owners saying the previous October that West Loop and Fulton Market District expansion projects were the cause of the club’s collapse. The Mid had organized eccentric dance parities with DJ’s booming music for about 10 years.

The Mid closed on the same weekend that River North nightclub Studio Paris prepared to move to its new destination on 306 N. Halsted St.
