West Loop Community Organization issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.

The Department of Planning and Development's (DPD) updated plan for real estate development and infrastructure investment within the Fulton Market neighborhood will be presented for consideration by the Chicago Plan Commission at its next meeting: 10AM on Thursday, February 18.

Community engagement for the updated Fulton Market Innovation District (FMID) plan started in late 2020 with the posting of the draft plan update online. Feedback and comments were incorporated into an updated draft, posted online , Thursday, February 11.

Anybody interested in providing verbal public comment during the Plan Commission meeting should fill out this form and submit it to cpc@cityofchicago.org by 10AM on Tuesday, February 16. There is no need to include an agenda number or address on the form, simply list "FMID" as the project address. Plan Commission staff will follow up individually with instructions for joining the meeting to those who submit the form.

Members of the public wishing to provide public comment on the plan update may do so in writing by emailing cpc@cityofchicago.org by 10AM on Wednesday, February 17.

The original FMID plan was adopted in 2014 to help guide the westward expansion of the central business district around the Morgan Street CTA station, which opened in 2012. Since then, the 217-acre area has amassed over $14 billion in approved or built real estate investment, including 1,700 hotel rooms, 3,800 residential units, and 8.1 million square feet of office space.

The updated FMID plan includes 12 new strategies to guide mixed-use improvements in the area primarily bounded by Hubbard Street, Halsted Street, Randolph Street, and Ogden Avenue on the Near West Side. To ensure the plan continues to balance market demands with stakeholder concerns, the new strategies propose to lift restrictions on residential uses north of Lake Street, establish a 30 percent affordability goal for new residential projects, identify new open space and public art opportunities, and establish local infrastructure priorities, among other improvements.
