The West Loop Library is offering free after school workshops for sixth to eighth grade students.
The library is located at 122 North Aberdeen and hours are Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
As part of the program, the library’s YOUmedia space also offers free workshops designed to introduce teen students to 3D printing, vinyl cutting, gaming, podcasting and photography. The studio's equipment includes flash forge, 3D printer, Canon Rebel 171 DSLR camera and a lighting kit. The sound studio houses Scarlett Interface, RODE mic, MAC Desktop with Logic, music keyboard, DELL PC with STEM Gaming, Nintendo Switch, microscope and DELL Laptops and rotary tool.
The sound studio is also available for reservations for up to two hours per session. Those interested can inquire at the circulation desk. Certification is required and a maximum of only three teens at each space is allowed.
YOUmedia's upcoming events include Epic Gamer, ChiTeen Lit Fest meeting, Teen Screen and t-shirt making.
The 26,500-square-foot West Loop branch opened last January where Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios once stood, with the property donated to the city by West Loop-based developer Sterling Bay. The West Loop’s first-ever public library branch was recently honored with the Frank Lloyd Wright Award from the Illinois chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its achievement in enhancing the natural and built environment of a community.
