Fulton Market and Randolph Street aren’t the only areas of the West Loop experiencing a building boom, and a new 24-story apartment high-rise next to the Eisenhower Expressway is just the latest example.
Tandem Towers has begun construction of the building at 1125 W. Van Buren St., which was designed by Antunovich Associates and preliminarily approved by the City Plannning Commission in 2018. It will house 200 apartments (but with only seven on-site parking spaces), in addition to street-level retail and residential lobby, and covered rooftop terraces on the second and 24th floors.
Plans are for the as-yet-unnamed building to be part of a trio of adjacent high rises. It is separated by a single parcel from Landmark West Loop, a high-rise that opened its doors two years ago. And Related Midwest, along with the Pizzuti Companies, is seeking to build another tower—this one would be 26 stories and offer 351 units—in that parcel, according to a report in Curbed Chicago.
A 26-story, 351-unit rental tower is in the works for the parcel between those two towers, according to paperwork filed with the city by Related Midwest and the Pizzuti Companies. Meanwhile, Tandem also has approval for a 20-story, 201-unit apartment project at nearby 1050 W. Van Buren.
Tandem has filed for approval of its plans for another new building close by, at 1150 W. Van Buren. This would be 20-stories tall and contain 201 apartments.
If completed as planned, the buildings could bring more than 700 additional housing units to the southern portion of the West Loop.
