Dine-Amic Hospitality, a major player in the West Loop restaurant meccas of Fulton Market and Randolph Restaurant Row, plans to open a Greek restaurant with a modern twist at 905 W. Fulton Market this fall.
The eatery will take up one-fourth of the street-level floor on the corner of Fulton Market and Peoria.
Dine-Amic owns Bandit, Bar Siena and Bombobar, three of the many restaurants that have made the area a must for foodies—and in the process overshadowed the dining scene in nearby Greektown.
Now the company is set to open an as-yet-unnamed Greek eatery in a new 8,000-square-foot building.
Aside from the traditional popularity of Greek food in Chicago, decades of touting the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet—high in fish and veggies, low in meat and dairy, spiced up with citrus and wine—have made emporiums offering such fare popular with diners from all ethnic backgrounds.
The new restaurant, though, will have some significant differences from its more traditional walking-distance neighbors. Dine-Amic cofounder David Rekhson, who is married to a Greek-American woman and visits the country annually, told Eater Chicago his new eatery will feature a more 21st Century approach to Greek food, starting with an earth-toned décor instead of the traditional blue-and-white that decorates most traditional Greek restaurants.
There will be a charcoal- and wood-burning hearth that will, Rekhson hopes, impart the same flavors that Greek islanders who cook outside bring to their food. True to the islands—and the healthful Mediterranean diet—the menu will center around seafood and vegetables.
The company has yet to hire a chef, who will run an open kitchen visible from a special chef’s table. Dine-Amic plans seating for 290 and will feature an outdoor patio for when the weather permits outdoor dining and two private dining rooms.
Also in the building will be the offices of Mondelez International, which makes Oreo cookies and Ritz and Trisket crackers. No word yet on if those will somehow be incorporated into the menu.
